The Whale Trailer: Brendan Fraser Believes in the Good of Humanity (Video)

Brendan Fraser’s character in the trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale wholeheartedly believes in the good of humanity, even though his life didn’t turn out the way he might have wanted it to.

Fraser plays Charlie, a reclusive English teacher who tries to reconnect with his teenage daughter, Ellie (Sadie Sink). The cast also features Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, Samantha Morton, Jacey Sink and Sathya Sridharan.

“Do you ever get the feeling people are incapable of not caring?” Fraser says as Charlie in the trailer. “People are amazing.”

The trailer is full of emotion, with just about everyone pictured in it crying — Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, and Brendan Fraser are all in tears.

Featuring a screenplay by Samuel D. Hunter, who also wrote the play that the movie is based on, The Whale is set to arrive in theaters in December from A24.

Aronofsky, whose past work includes The Wrestler and Requiem for a Dream, produces alongside Jeremy Dawson and Ari Handel. Tyson Bidner and Scott Franklin executive produce while Dylan Golden and Brendan Naylor associate produce.

Fraser is currently the frontrunner for the best actor Oscar and has received multiple lengthy standing ovations at festivals where The Whale has screened.

“It felt so affirming,” he told Variety of the audience reception. “I was emotional because it was acknowledgment that what we did is making an impact. And that kind of response feels completely new in my professional life.”
