Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

Warner Bros.

Stanley Kubrick’s final film, a curious meditation on marriage and commitment, goes way over the top with a party scene filled with gratuitous flesh — and that’s just the R-rated version. After Kubrick’s death, but before the film’s release, distributor Warner Bros. digitally covered some bodies to avoid an NC-17 rating the studio feared would be box-office poison.

But the sleaze works! We feel deeply immersed in the strange underworld that imperils the marriage of Bill and Alice (Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman). The fact that they were married at the time added to a voyeuristic element that serves the film well.
