The PGA has just announced the nominations for their annual awards ceremony. When reading this, I immediately wondered how the Tiger Woods sex scandal might influence this. As it turns out, the Professional Golf Association and Producers Guild of America share the same initials, but neither has anything to do with the other. For the past two decades, the Producers Guild has been awarding individuals who played a prominent role in the production of the year’s top movies (not golf).
The Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures is the Guild’s highest honor, but those who produced works in various categories of moviemaking, including animation, documentary and long-form television, will also be recognized. The producer’s role varies from film to film, so it is difficult to see his or her contribution from the audience’s perspective. If the movie is good, however, it’s a pretty safe bet that the producer got the job done. The ceremony will take place on January 24 at the Palladium in Hollywood.
