Halloween is fast approaching, and the vast amount of moviegoers who apparently wanted to get into the spirit of the holiday managed to put horror film Paranormal Activity 2 at the top of the box office this past weekend. The new release earned $41.5 million, beating out Jackass 3D, which came in at number two. There are already rumors of a fourth installment of Jackass in the works; not surprising, as Jackass 3D‘s box office gross after only 10 days is $87.1 million. This past weekend it grossed $21.6 million.

Coming in at number three was Red (weekend gross $15 million, total gross $43.4 million), while Clint Eastwood’s take on the supernatural, Hereafter, took spot number four after being expanded from limited release (weekend gross $12 million, total gross $12.3 million). The Social Network rounded out the top five, earning $7.3 million this weekend and $72.9 million so far.

New releases included Boxing Gym ($7,500), The Taqwacores ($3,400) and Inhale ($2,700).

Coming out in wide release next weekend is Saw VII 3D. Out in limited release are Wild Target, Shake Hands with the Devil, Inspector Bellamy, Eichmann, The Kids Grow Up, The Magician, Monsters, Walkaway, Waste Land, Welcome to the Rileys,\ and Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields, a music doc that comes out this Wednesday.
