When we were scouting for locations, community leaders would repeatedly tell us: “We can open up our homes and lives to you and your cameras, but what are you going to give us in return?” We wanted to offer something beyond salaries or location fees that we would pay during production. As a crew, we agreed to run a digital filmmaking workshop every Saturday during pre-production. It was a challenge on our tight schedule for each department head to give up a whole day of prep to come lead a class, but the process was a blast and really rewarding.
