Postcards from Colombia: The Making of Josef Wladyka’s Manos Sucias

2. Research and Scouting

It turned out our whole team was fearless. Here, producer Elena Greenlee is riding a simple skateboard style “brujita” with several local teenagers, while recording on the Canon 7D. “Brujita” literally means “little witch” in Spanish, but in the Colombian Pacific coast region, the term refers to the motorcycle-powered wooden platforms that scoot along railroad tracks, providing transportation in dense areas of the jungle where there are no roads. We were so floored by the discovery of these ingenious transportation devices that Alan and I immediately started sketching notes to write a set piece around them. That’s the amazing advantage of having your co-writer be your DP, as well.
