Johnny Depp Welcome Back as Captain Jack Sparrow, Jerry Bruckheimer Says

If Johnny Depp wants to return as Captain Jack Sparrow in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie, producer Jerry Bruckheimer will welcome him back with open arms.

Depp donned his Pirates outfit in a video shared over the weekend that he made for a young fan recovering from multiple heart surgeries, so he’s obviously not tired of the character. And if he wants to return to it on the big screen, Bruckheimer is open to the idea.

Asked by The Hollywood Reporter writer James Hibberd if Disney, which owns the Pirates franchise, would put Depp “front and center again in a Pirates sequel,” given the outcome of his successful defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard, Bruckheimer replied, “You’d have to ask them. I can’t answer that question. I really don’t know.”

But he went on to share his own feelings: “I would love to have him in the movie. He’s a friend, a terrific actor and it’s unfortunate that personal lives creep into everything we do.”

In June, Heard was ordered to pay Depp $10.35 million after a jury found her found liable for defaming Depp in an op-ed published in the Washington Post. At the same time, Depp was ordered to pay Heard $2 million in a countersuit.

On Monday, Depp and Heard announced that they had agreed to settle, and that she will pay him $1 million that he will donate to charity.

Coincidentally, The Hollywood Reporter‘s interview with Bruckheimer was published on the same day as the settlement announcement.

Over the weekend, the Kraken The Box YouTube channel, which is run by a young fan who goes by “Captain Kori,” posted Depp’s Jack Sparrow video. Depp spoke in the warbling, drunky style of Capt. Jack Sparrow.

“So, Capt. Kori, terribly sorry I missed out on this,” Depp began. “Meant to say it, forgot to say it, didn’t say it, gonna say it now. Saying it, I’ll say it. I hear tell of something they speak about in the ages of now called the YouTube channel, which I don’t understand, but why not?”

Later he promises to follow and promote the channel, saying it “will make for a wonderful entertainment expertise momentary lapse of togetherness altogether in one space, but far apart, but then, at the same time, very close. Curious, enduring, and strange.”

Depp has been rebuilding his career since his feud with Heard largely sidelined him for years. He lost a libel lawsuit in the United Kingdom in 2020 over an article in a British tabloid that called him a “wife-beater,” and lost the role of Gellart Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise.
But in August, after his success in the U.S. defamation case, he announced that he would direct his Donnie Brasco co-star Al Pacino in the new film Modi, about Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani. The film will mark Depp’s first work as a director since 1997’s The Brave, in which Depp starred with Marlon Brando.
