In The Irishman, Jesse Plemons’ Charles “Chuckie” O’Brien is a somewhat hapless figure who, if nothing else, has enough wit to helps his honorary stepdad Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino) stop a would-be assassin.
So it’s interesting that the real Chuckie O’Brien helped inspire a character who is anything but hapless: Tom Hagen, the razor-sharp Corleone family consigliere in The Godfather and The Godfather Part II.
