Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are as thick as thieves in Good Will Hunting as they are in real life — which could mean nothing, as the memes say.

The two pals wrote the screenplay for the film, in which they star as two best friends from Boston’s Southie neighborhood. Matt Damon plays Will Hunting, a recent prison parolee who is secretly a mathematic genius. He starts working nights as a janitor at MIT, where he casually solves an incredibly challenging math problem, starting him on his hero’s journey.

While out drinking with his pals, including Affleck’s character Chuckie Sullivan, he meets Skylar, a charming British woman studying at Harvard played by Minnie Driver. The film also features incredible performances from Robin Williams and Stellan Skarsgård.

Among the most iconic moments in this movie is when Chuckie tells Will that he secretly hopes that one day he’ll go to his house to pick him up and he won’t be there. Then, Chuckie will know that Will has gone on to pursue his dreams and live up to his full potential instead of staying in Southie and working construction like him.

Affleck and Damon went on to win the best screenplay Oscar for this movie, which is just one of the many movies they’ve made together in their well-documented friendship. They have a production company together called Artists Equity through which they’ve produced and starred in 2023’s sports drama Air.
