How to Start Never Stopping: Eight Tricks and Tips From Moviemaker Jorma Taccone

Don’t Wait For Permission to Make Stuff. Make Stuff!

Working at SNL was all about self-motivation. If you have an idea, you have to just run out and do it. We would write these things—never just bring them to table reads and then go shoot them. Almost everything I’ve done is a weird concept and harder for people to get without the clarity of me just going out and making it. So, just make stuff. There’s features made on iPhones now. Make something, edit it, and see where the problems are. You don’t really need to know many tricks or rules to get started. Try as many things as you can, especially if someone’s not paying you to do it. Mess around and see what weird angles you can get away with. If it works, you’ll discover your style. Figure it out by doing it. You don’t need fancy film schools or equipment to tell a good story. A good story is a good story regardless of how it’s filmed. MM
