Even though there are 15 film commissions to aid independent moviemakers in Los Angeles County, Hollywood itself has never had its own film office…until now. Finally, on February 27, 2008, the Hollywood Film Office announced the official opening of its doors in the Mecca of movie history.
The office plans to offer studio support on an independent moviemaker budget—a step that will hopefully encourage the independent community to return to the area that started it all. To reinforce its mission, independent film producer Bruce Wayne Gillies (The Story Behind Baadasssss!) has been selected to lead the office and its team of experienced film professionals.
The opening of the HFO is an invitation to draw moviemakers from around the world. The fact that it coincides with the 100th anniversary of moviemaking in Los Angeles—the first movie produced in Los Angeles was In the Sultan’s Power in 1908—is a coincidence. Nonetheless, the HFO plans to celebrate both occasions, and the history of moviemaking in Los Angeles, with its Grand Opening this summer.
