Wolverine in the X-Men films was victimized and used as a weapon in his earlier life. He never had a family. Anyone he put his trust into betrayed him, and the society around him as a whole was prejudiced against him because of his mutant attributes. Mutants as a class of people are portrayed in the franchise as a corollary to the way people of color, LGBTQ people, or another minoritized group are treated in the real world. In light of his past, and knowing his character is being used to explore themes of exile, alienation, and discrimination, Wolverine’s brutal behavior in the X-Men films is often able to be treated as righteous.
