Hold on to your hats, people; Avatar is no longer number one at the box office. And what huge-budget, battle sequence-filled epic replaced it? Well, that would be Dear John, the romantic drama based on a Nicholas Sparks (author of The Notebook) novel. In its number two spot, Avatar earned $23.6 million over the weekend, pushing its total gross up to $630 million. Dear John earned $32.4 million in its first weekend of release. In distant third was new release From Paris With Love; the action thriller earned $8.1 million. Rounding out the top five were Edge of Darkness ($7 million over the weekend; total gross $29 million) and The Tooth Fairy ($6.5 million weekend; $34.3 total).

Out in limited release were the Red Riding Trilogy, the first movie of which (Red Riding Trilogy: 1974) earned $13,000 on just one theater, and District B13—Ultimatum, which earned $10,500 on nine theaters. Next weekend several new releases will be competing with Dear John: Valentine’s Day, The Wolf Man and Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Out in limited release will be French film A Prophet.
