Last week’s number two film, The Help, triumphed over four new wide releases to finish at the top of the box office this weekend. Its weekend gross of $20.4 million brings its total so far to $71.8 million. Last week’s number one, Rise of the Planet of the Apes (weekend gross $16.3 million, total gross $133.7 million), fell to number two. Spy Kids: All the Time in the World earned $12 million in its first weekend, and fellow new release Conan the Barbarian earned a weekend gross of just $10 million. Rounding out the top five was new release Fright Night (weekend gross $8.3 million).
Need more proof that this weekend was a slow one? One Day, starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, didn’t even break the top five. The new wide release’s weekend gross of $5.1 million was enough to get it to spot number nine.
Out in limited release this weekend were Amigo ($40,000), Mozart’s Sister ($33,000) and 5 Days of War ($6,400).
Out in wide release next weekend are Guillermo del Toro’s haunted house remake Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and the Zoe Saldana-starring action thriller Colombiana. Set for limited release are Brighton Rock, BuzzKill, The Caller, Chasing Madoff, Circumstance, The Family Tree, Higher Ground, Our Idiot Brother, Politics of Love, Redemption Road, Special Treatment and Swinging with the Finkels.
