CODA, writer-director Siân Heder’s moving story of a child of Deaf parents in a Massachusetts fishing town, won Best Picture at the Oscars on Sunday, a win largely overshadowed by a slap. Nonetheless, it was a huge victory for Apple, which bought CODA, an independent film, out of the Sundance Film Festival for $25 million at the height of the pandemic and then allowed it to work its considerable charms on Oscar voters.
CODA‘s biggest competition was The Power of the Dog, Netflix’s latest big swing at a Best Picture film. The streaming service has never won in the category, though Power of the Dog director Jane Campion won Best Director.
CODA‘s Troy Kotsur won Best Supporting Actor, and delivered his moving acceptance speech in American Sign Language. Heder also won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. (CODA is a remake of French film, La Famille Bélier.)
Jessica Chastain won Best Actress for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Will Smith won Best Actor for King Richard — moments after slapping Chris Rock for a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith — and Ariana DeBose won Best Supporting Actress for West Side Story.
This year’s Oscars, produced by Will Packer, aspired to win back audiences after last year’s ceremony was the lowest-rated of all time. He enlisted big production numbers, including by Beyonce and Billie Eilish, as well as online voting in unofficial categories like Most Cheer Worthy Moment. (Thanks to Zack Snyder’s legions of Twitter fans, a scene involving The Flash in Zack Snyder’s Justice League was deemed the most cheer-worthy of any moment in the history of cinema.)
But it was the slap that turned the Oscars viral. Seemingly everyone had an opinion or take, and the reach of the short clip in which Smith surprised Rock was certain to be seen by far more people who sat through the actual ceremony.
Here is the full list of Oscar winners and nominees, with the winners in bold.
