OPERATIONS MANAGER

MovieMaker Magazine, established in 1993, is one of the oldest and most widely read independent film magazines in the world. We’re looking for part- to full-time Operations Manager to oversee many of the administrative aspects of publishing our quarterly magazine and website. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented individual with publishing industry experience. Interest in and knowledge of the independent film world is a must.

The Operations Manager will work out of our Playa Vista office. We are a small team and the position entails managing a wide variety of tasks, including coordinating internally with our editorial, subscription, and advertising departments, as well as establishing and/or maintaining good working relationships with various film industry partners. This position requires a high level of flexibility and the ability to manage projects that pertain to all departments of the magazine. Perks include the opportunity to attend occasional screenings, film festivals, and other press events. We consider a desire to write for the magazine a bonus, so please include writing samples or links with your application.

Duties include:

Partnership Liaison: Working with festivals, organizations and our other partners to establish and maintain mutually beneficial trade partnerships. Negotiating contracts. Managing and fulfilling marketing deliverables on both ends of the agreement. Reaching out to new potential partners.

Social Media and Email Marketing: Using Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to create brand awareness and grow our audience. Using Constant Contact to send out our weekly newsletter, as well as e-blasts on behalf of clients. Designing and sending out renewal notices and other promotional material.

Subscription Management and Growth: Coordinating with subscription department to evaluate subscription numbers. Researching and implementing audience growth tactics. Initiating and overseeing subscription and renewal campaigns, both mail and email. Opportunity to earn commissions on group subscription purchases.

Office Management: Maintaining office functionality and organization, filing/paperwork, covering phone, etc. Coordinating inter-office schedules and meetings with remotely located coworkers. Hiring and training interns. Assisting publisher in evaluating business opportunities. Overseeing sale and shipment of back issues, and managing back issue supply.

Various Editorial Tasks: Assisting in proofing, copy editing, research, fact-checking. Occasional writing.

Required qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Flexibility and willingness to be involved with all aspects of the publishing process
Knowledge of and interest in independent film. Filmmaking experience is a bonus
Previous administrative experience, preferably in the publishing industry
Impeccable written and verbal communication skills. Familiarity with AP Style
Outstanding interpersonal skills. Experience with negotiation and maintaining beneficial business relationships
Familiarity with Mac OS, WordPress, Microsoft Office, Google Docs. Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign) a plus.

Preferred qualifications:

Familiarity with MovieMaker Magazine’s content and brand
Understanding of and experience with developing promotional marketing tactics
Experience establishing partnerships with brands and key influencers in the film industry
Graphic design capabilities
