Topsy-Turvy (1999)

Set in the Victorian era in 1884 and 1885, this movie musical follows famed musical playwright and composer Gilbert and Sullivan as they’re creating their famous musical The Mikado. It stars Tim Broadbent as W. S. Gilbert and Allan Corduner as Sir Arthur Sullivan, with supporting cast also including Timothy Spall, Lesley Manville and Ron Cook.
Their partnership ended up forging other famous musicals, including the H.M.S. Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance.
The term “topsy-turvy” refers to Gilbert and Sullivan’s storytelling style in which they weaved the real and fantasy worlds into one.
