This Oscar weekend the top spot went to a new release, Tim Burton’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, which earned $116.3 million. The number two film, Antoine Fuqua’s Brooklyn’s Finest, earned substantially less; just $13.5 million in its first weekend of release. The third spot went to last weekend’s top earner, Shutter Island; its weekend gross of $13.3 million brings its total up to $95.8 million. Rounding out the top five were Cop Out ($9.1 million) and Avatar ($7.7 million).
The only other new release was the animated surprise Oscar nominee The Secret of Kells, and though it didn’t take home the Best Animated Feature award at the Oscars last night, it did earn more than $40,000 in just one theater in three days. Out next weekend in wide release are Remember Me, starring Robert Pattinson as a non-vampire, Green Zone, Our Family Wedding and She’s Out of My League. Out in limited release is Bradley Rust Grey’s The Exploding Girl, which premiered last year at the Tribeca Film Festival.
