Daniel Day-Lewis

Focus Features

Daniel Day Lewis is a three-time Best Actor Oscar winner for 1989’s My Left Foot, 2007’s There Will Be Blood and 2012’s Lincoln, but he called it quits with Phantom Thread (above) when his publicist announced in 2017 that he would “no longer be working as an actor.”

She added that he was “immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years.”

Of all the actors who quit, he may be the most fascinating because he maintains such a low public profile. The 66-year-old spawned massive press attention this spring just by going for a couple of walks around New York City. He’s one of those great actors who quit acting at what was arguably his peak.
