A Kid Like Jake (Premieres)

Who: Silas Howard, director

Logline: As Alex and Greg navigate their roles as parents to a young son who prefers Cinderella to G.I. Joe, a rift grows between them, one that forces them to confront their own concerns about what’s best for their child, and each other.

The first spark of an idea for this movie came when: [Producer and star] Jim Parsons and his production company, That’s Wonderful, optioned Daniel Pearl’s beautifully written play. I was intrigued with the fresh take on the state of schools and competition for education in this country, the inescapability of gender, and the commodification of “other-ness.”

An audience watching my film probably won’t know that: I’m a trailer park punk at heart.

I need to give a special shout-out to: the cast and totally rock star crew, including our youngest cast member, 5-year-old Leo James Davis, who played Jake. The authenticity, on-point fashion, and unique personality he brought to the world were golden. He’s our future and it looks good.

When I heard we got into Sundance I: yell-laughed in the programmer’s ear and repeated, “Wow, wow”… loudly. Then promptly got the flu my body was staving off out of sheer stress from the waiting.
