Pearl (2022)
As some people get more sensitive about comedy, some of the best movie comedy has shifted over to the horror genre. Ti West’s lush prequel to X is so completely deadpan that it takes a while to realize you’re watching one of the funniest movies released in 2022.
Mia Goth’s total commitment makes Pearl a captivating character study of a lonely young woman gone movie mad. She should have been nominated for an Oscar, especially for her very long, uncut breakdown scene.
Pearl lurches with admirable chutzpah from cute to alarming and we love it. We can’t wait to see next year’s sequel, Maxxxine, in which Goth returns.
