Mommy Dead and Dearest
From Erin Lee Carr, daughter of New York Times columnist David Carr, Mommy Dead and Dearest tells the famous story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, a victim of child abuse through her mother’s Munchausen by proxy syndrome. The mental disorder causes a parent to fabricate illnesses in their child in order to obtain sympathy and monetary gain. After years of being forced to pretend to have various illnesses including muscular dystrophy and epilepsy, Gypsy Rose and her boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, conspired to murder her mother, Clauddine Blanchard, in 2015. Both Blanchard and Godejohn are currently serving prison sentences. Mommy Dead and Dearest analyzes Blanchard’s fascinating and tragic case.
