As Rogue One fans know, that’s Princess Leia in a very surprising and impactful cameo in the Star Wars: A New Hope prequel. It was created the CGI Leia by digitally altering the features of Norwegian actress Ingvild Deila.
Not everyone loved it: An Esquire writer said the CGI Leia had “a weird, glossy sheen… and buggy eyes that look taken from a poorly-rendered video game cutscene.”
But director Gareth Edwards said Carrie Fisher herself was impressed. He told CNN Money that when Fisher saw the CGI version of her younger self, she assumed that Edwards “thought it was real footage of her” that wasn’t used in the original 1977 Star Wars: A New Hope (above).
