Christopher Nolan’s Inception held onto the top spot this weekend, earning $43.5 million with a total gross of $143.6 million. New release Salt grabbed spot number two, with a weekend release of $36.5 million, while Despicable Me slipped one spot to number three, with a weekend gross of $24.1 million and a total gross of $161.7 million. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice came in at spot number four (weekend gross $9.6 million, total gross $42.6 million), and number five went to Toy Story 3 (weekend gross $9.0 million, total gross $379.5 million).

New release Ramona and Beezus, based on the classic children’s book, failed to crack the top five, coming in at number six with a gross of $8.0 million. Other new releases were Countdown to Zero ($48,000), Todd Solondz’s newest, Life During Wartime ($32,500), and Jean-Michel Basqiuat: The Radiant Child ($18,137).

Out next weekend is the hotly-anticipated Oscar bait Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, as well as Dinner for Schmucks and Charlie St. Cloud. Out in limited release are The Dry Land, The Extra Man, Get Low, Smash His Camera, and I Love You, Phillip Morris. It seems like the last of those has had half a dozen release dates since it was a success at Sundance (in January 2009). . .let’s hope this time people actually get a chance to see it.
