Director Paul W.S. Anderson has yet another box office hit on his hands with the 3D movie, Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D, which claimed the number one spot over the weekend. Although it faced little competition from other new releases, the film earned an impressive $27.7 million in its opening weekend. Takers followed in second place with a weekend gross of $6.1 million and a total gross of $48.1 million so far. The American, Machete, and Going the Distance rounded out the top five.

Though Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D was the only new movie out in wide release this past weekend, there’s a long list of new movies with smaller releases. One is Legendary (a wrestling movie, released by WWE Films, starring John Cena—somehow, all three things combined to gross only $135,210). I’m Still Here, starring some seriously absurd facial hair, and, oh, Joaquin Phoenix, earned $98,000, while De Mai Tinh earned $52,800. Other releases were The Romantics ($42,900), Expecting Mary ($28,700), Bran Nue Dae ($26,960) and Lovely, Still ($4,400).

Will next weekend see a more exciting box office? If you like films starring Keira Knightley that have been adapted from literary masterpieces (as opposed to films starring Milla Jovovich that have been adapted from video games), then the answer is yes. Never Let Me Go, adapted from the acclaimed novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, comes out on September 15th. Also out on the 15th (in limited release) are I Am Comic and Kings of Pastry. Out on the 17th are Alpha and Omega 3D, Easy A, Devil, The Town and Catfish. Limited releases on that date are The Freebie, Jack Goes Boating, The Wild Hunt, Picture Me: A Model’s Diary, Skateland, El Superstar: The Unlikely Rise of Juan Frances and The Trouble With Terkel.
