The Final Destination Wins the Battle of the Horror Franchise Sequels

In this weekend’s battle of the horror franchise sequels, The Final Destination emerged victorious, taking the number one spot with more than $28 million. Its competition—Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2—could only scare up a third place spot, earning $17 million in its debut weekend.

Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds dropped one spot to become second in command of this weekend’s box office. Its $20 million weekend brings the film’s total two-week take to $73,760,000. District 9 continues to attract audiences; the Peter Jackson-produced thriller landed in the number four spot with $10,700,000 and could easily reach the $100 million mark within the week.

The top five was rounded out by G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, earning $8 million for a total gross (so far) of more than $132 million.

Can the star power of Sandra Bullock (The Proposal) and the dude quotient of Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) mean next weekend’s box office will be All About Steve? Check back on next Monday’s Top of the Box Office.
