Next weekend will see Paul, an R-rated comedy about a wise-cracking slacker alien on a road trip, come out in wide release. But last weekend the box office still belonged to extraterrestrial invaders doing what extraterrestrial invaders do best: Rampant property destruction. New release Battle: Los Angeles grabbed the top spot at the box office, grossing $36 million. Last week’s number one, Rango, slipped to second place (weekend gross $23 million, total gross $68.6 million), while new release Red Riding Hood earned $14.1 million, enough to land at number three. Rounding out the top five were The Adjustment Bureau (weekend gross $11.4 millon, total gross $38.4 million) and new release Mars Needs Moms; the latter’s family-friendly approach to alien shenanigans earned $6.8 million.

Cary Fukunaga’s Jane Eyre, starring Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender, earned $182,317 in limited release. Fellow new limited releases were Kill the Irishman ($155,500), Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy ($78,100), 3 Backyards ($11,000) and Making the Boys ($7,500).

Out in wide release next weekend are Paul, The Lincoln Lawyer and Limitless. Cracks, Desert Flower, The Music Never Stopped, Nostalgia for the Light and Win Win will all be out in limited release.
