The last time we saw Zhang Yimou’s brilliant directing and use of color was during the Beijing Olympic opening and closing ceremonies. Now we get to anxiously wait for his remake of the Coen Brothers’ classic, Blood Simple.
Sony Pictures Classic announced its production partnership and acquisition of the rights to Yimou’s remake, which will be produced by the Academy Award-winning producer Bill Kong (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).
“The idea of a remake of Blood Simple as seen through the eyes of Yimou’s masterful visual elegance and clever narrative twists is genius,” stated Michael Barker and Tom Bernard, Sony Pictures Classics co-presidents and co-founders.
The original Blood Simple is a horror/crime film about a saloonkeeper who hires a private investigator to kill his cheating wife, but Yimou’s will be a thriller-comedy involving a Chinese noodle shop owner and the introduction of guns to characters who are used to swords.
All partners are excited to be working together, so with Yimou’s unique and colorful eye and Kong’s producing skills, maybe this film will pass SPC and Kong’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon for the highest grossing foreign language film in U.S. box office history.
