Zac Efron Is a Slightly Confused, Mustachioed Do-Gooder in The Greatest Beer Run Ever Trailer

Zac Efron is a well-meaning guy who just wants to bring some beer to the American soldiers fighting in Vietnam in Apple TV+’s The Greatest Beer Run Ever. So he decides to go there and do just that.

The movie is based on the true story of John “Chickie” Donahue, who actually traveled 8,000 miles in 1967 at the age of 26 just to smuggle some beers to his friends fighting in Vietnam.

But, of course, what Donahue ended up finding wasn’t just friendship, but also the horrors of war.

“Do these protestors not know that our soldiers see them on TV? I’d like to go over to Vietnam, track down all the boys in the neighborhood and give ’em a beer,” Bill Murray’s bartender character says in the trailer for The Greatest Beer Run Ever.

“I could do that,” Efron says. “I’m going to Vietnam, and I’m bringing ‘em beer!”

The next thing we know, he and his neighborhood friend-turned-soldier are running for their lives through a war zone.

It’s all documented in the real-life Donahue’s New York Times best-selling memoir, The Greatest Beer Run Ever: A Memoir of Friendship, Loyalty, and War, which Donahue co-wrote with J.T. Molloy. Pabst Blue Ribbon also made a short YouTube documentary about Donahue’s story in 2015.

The new Apple TV+ drama starring Efron as Donahue is directed by Green Book‘s Peter Farrelly, who also worked with Brian Currie and Pete Jones on the script. It will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and then will have its theatrical debut and begin streaming on Apple TV+ on Sept. 30.

The movie also stars Russell Crowe, Archie Renaux, Kyle Allen, Jake Picking, Will Ropp, and Ruby Ashbourne Serkis.
