14. NYC Horror Film Festival // New York, NY // October 26-29, 2017

“Low-key and low-budget,” NYC Horror Film Festival’s forte is “scrappy, bloody, and sometimes cheesy features and shorts,” says a panelist. D.I.Y. moviemakers have called it home for 15 editions and counting, and feature and short screenwriters alike duke it out in the festival’s cutthroat competitions. A family affair hosted by founder Michael J. Hein and the rest of his kin at downtown Manhattan’s Tribeca Film Center, NYCHFF is a great place to flex your developing genre muscles and find future collaborators, even in the unpolished stages of your career. Still, it ain’t amateur hour: The fest’s Lifetime Achievement Award has trafficked in legends like Wes Craven, Roger Corman, and Rob Zombie, who stop by to drop knowledge on hungry up-and-comers.
