9. L’Etrange Festival // Paris, France // September 2018

A cinematic cabinet of curiosities, L’Etrange Festival, held at the Forum des images in Paris, touts “an inspired programming mix of cutting-edge new genre works, big films from the fest circuit and retro,” one panelist raves. Its big draw? “Carte Blanche” lineups: blocks curated by such visiting luminaries as Alejandro Jodorowsky, Sion Sono, Gaspar Noe, Ben Wheatley, Kenneth Anger, and more. L’Etrange’s international short film competition bridges continental divides in an instant, and live shamanic rituals hypnotize capacity crowds. Moviemakers taking their strange features to the market should also be aware of their Grand Prix Nouveau Genre, which includes a broadcast sale for Canal+.
