What’s in Your Kit: Cinematographer Neville Kidd

Published by

For our series What’s in Your Kit, we ask a range of working cinematographers to share the gear they can’t live without.

This week, veteran television cinematographer Neville Kidd (Doctor Who, Outlander) opens up his kit for us.

The Kit

A. Tilley hat

B. North Face baseball cap

C. Moleskin notepad and my favorite pencil

Carolynne, my wife, buys me a new moleskin for Christmas and I love it. It reminds me of her and I panic every time I misplace it.

D. Passport

E. Apple iPad

I bought my iPad in New York while we were filming the Doctor Who episode “Angels Take Manhattan.” It does everything—all my film apps like Sunseeker, pCAM and PIX are loaded up.

F. Ray-Ban sunglasses

G. Card readers

H. Sharpie pen

I. Panasonic Lumix 16:9 Camera

I bought it for recce photos on Heroes and Villains episode “Shogun” in Tokyo. This is like an old friend and has been with me for over seven years—a long time for a digital camera.

J. Canon 5D

I bought for recce photos on Sherlock. A great DSLR that takes a lot of abuse and superb photos.

I Can’t Live Without:

The item I can’t do without when I’m filming is my Tilley hat! This is an essential part of my kit, because I spend a lot of time in the sun!

Gear I’d Love to Have:

I want to buy a set of Cooke S5i lenses for the perfect cinematic look! MM

Four cinematographers show off their kits in MovieMaker‘s Spring 2015 issue, on newsstands April 28, 2015. See previous editions of What’s in Your Kit here.
