Vimeo’s New Pay-to-View Service Heats Up with Six Compelling Films

In September, video-sharing website Vimeo (one of the world’s largest creative networks) announced an exciting new feature—Pay-to-View—which allows moviemakers to sell access to their films and videos behind a paywall. Now, the site is making good on that promise. It was recently announced that Vimeo is opening the preview phase of the upcoming pay-to-view service with the release of six thought-provoking new films.

The slate of movies—which were handpicked by the Vimeo staff—benefit from the site’s flexibility: Pay-to-View allows moviemakers to sell their work directly to a worldwide audience, with control over pricing, viewing periods, release geography and bonus content. For the six films, such innovative features include longer rental periods, such as two months for the snowboarding adventure Jeremy Jones’ Further, extra content for the action sports drama Sunny (which can only be found online at Vimeo) and a global release for the documentary Beauty is Embarrassing, which explores the creative process of acclaimed artist Wayne White.

Perhaps the most highly anticipated film is the powerful documentary, Sons of the Clouds: The Last Colony, produced by Academy Award winner Javier Bardem. This hard hitting film sheds light on the political and human rights issues facing the people of the Western Sahara, as well as the efforts to restore peace to the region.

In addition to empowering and providing support for both established and emerging moviemakers, Vimeo’s pay-to-view service is committed to bringing even more original, quality content to the site’s 85 million monthly viewers. Those who buy access to the pay-to-view movies will find them automatically downloaded to their “Watch Later” list, which enables them to conveniently access the films on virtually any device—including smart phones, tablets, connected TV’s with Vimeo apps and many others. Vimeo will release the full pay-to-view service to all PRO members in early 2013.

“Our goal is to provide an open and flexible platform that allows all creators and content owners to earn revenue directly from their audiences,” said Vimeo CEO, Kerry Trainor. “We’re really excited to offer this selection of high quality movies in our preview, and we look forward to working with creators worldwide whose stories have a clear home on Vimeo.”
