directed by Joe Wright

PG-13; 117 minutes

One day while walking through a park, Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.), always on the lookout for a good story to fill his daily column in the Los Angeles Times, wanders up to a homeless man. His name is Nathaniel Anthony Ayers, Jr. (Jamie Foxx) and he’s playing a violin that has only two strings. After a few minutes of chatting, Steve finds out some very interesting things about Nathaniel: He’s very bright, but rattles on as though he can’t help himself. He also tells the reporter that he had attended the Julliard School of Music as a cellist. Flashbacks show how Nathaniel grew up—and ultimately became schizophrenic. Lopez works hard to help this talented musician pull himself up and make a new life, but finally comes to realize that being his friend is more important than anything else he can do. Catherine Keener is featured as Mary, Steve’s boss and ex-wife in this remarkable and heartwarming true story.

DVD Extras: Commentary; deleted scenes; featurettes include “An Unlikely Friendship: Making The Soloist.”
