TRON: Legacy grabbed the top spot at the box office this past weekend, earning $43.6 million in its first weekend. The number two movie was another CGI-fest, Yogi Bear 3D, which earned only $16.7 million, thus rendering all of those who thought the mischievous Hanna-Barbera food thief would pull an upset over Jeff Bridges completely embarrassed. At least now I know not to expect too much from future “Gee whiz, those cartoons are interacting with humans!” movies, which is a shame, because I had such high hopes for The Smurfs.
Coming in third this weekend was The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The film made $12.4 million, bringing its total earnings to $42.7 million. In fourth place was The Fighter, which earned $12.2 million in the wake of its six Golden Globe nominations and expansion to wide release. The film’s total gross so far is $12.6 million. In spot five was The Tourist (weekend gross $8.7 million, total gross $30.7 million).
Other new releases were How Do You Know ($7.6 million), Rabbit Hole ($55,000) and Casino Jack ($35,000).
Out on Christmas week are Little Fockers, True Grit, Somewhere and Country Strong (all being released on December 22nd) and Gulliver’s Travels and The Illusionist, both coming out on the 25th.
