We already know this year’s Tribeca Film Festival will be opening with Nicholas Stoller’s rom-com The Five-Year Engagement, and today the world-renowned fest has given us a more complete look at the films that will be making their way to lower Manhattan this April by announcing the lineup of their World Narrative Competition, World Documentary Competition and out-of-competition Viewpoints sections.
Of the 90 feature films chosen to screen at the 11th annual festival (chosen from 5,590 submissions—a Tribeca record), 46 of them have now been announced, with the remaining films—those in the Spotlight, Cinemania and Special screenings sections—being announced this Thursday, March 8th.
“The competition of any festival represents a window into its character and its agendas. Tribeca’s competition annually showcases our desire to present exceptional work across a spectrum of storytelling, places of origin and aesthetics,” notes Geoffrey Gilmore, Tribeca Enterprise’s chief creative officer. “This year, we present a balanced mix of American and international filmmaking, with what we believe has a special quality and exemplifies a range in the selection.”
Israeli director Eytan Fox’s Yossi (Ha-Sippur Shel Yossi) will be the opening night film in the World Narrative Competition section, while director Nisha Pahuja’s The World Before Her will hold the equivalent honor in the World Documentary Competition section. Some other films of note are Tribeca alum Bradley Rust Gray’s (The Exploding Girl) Jack and Diane, Lucy Mulloy’s Una noche, Oscar-nominated documentarian Scott Hamilton Kennedy’s (The Garden) Fame High, Harmony Korine’s The Fourth Dimension and James Franco and Ian Olds’ experimental thriller Francophrenia (Or Don’t Kill Me, I Know Where the Baby Is), which was created using behind-the-scenes footage from Franco’s stint on “General Hospital.”
