No surprises this week! X-Men: First Class grabbed first place at the box office last weekend with an opening weekend gross of $56 million, and in doing so pushed its fellow Marvel superhero movie, Thor, out of the top five. Woe is Thor. Last weekend’s number one, The Hangover Part II, came in second (weekend gross $32.4 million, total gross $186.8 million). Also in the top five were Kung Fu Panda 2 (weekend gross $24.3 million, total gross $100.4 million), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (weekend gross $18 million, total gross $190.2 million) and Bridesmaids (weekend gross $12.1 million, total gross $107.2 million).
The highly-anticipated indie comedies Beginners ($135,193) and Submarine ($40,754) both came out in limited release last weekend. Other new releases were The Last Mountain ($17,298), Beautiful Boy ($16,100), !Women, Art, Revolution ($6,361) and Jean-Luc Godard’s Film Socialisme ($4,000).
Out next weekend in wide release are Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer and Super 8, with One Lucky Elephant, The Countess, Bride Flight, The Chameleon, Just Like Us, Road to Nowhere, The Trip, Troll Hunter and Viva Riva coming out in limited release. And moviegoers will have to wait a while for the next Marvel superhero movie, as Captain America: The First Avenger doesn’t come out for a whole six and a half weeks.
