Box Office Goes to The Town

The top three movies at the box office this past weekend were new releases, with spot number one going to Ben Affleck’s The Town, which earned $23.8 million. The high school comedy Easy A came in at number two with an $18.2 million gross. Three was Devil ($12.5 million), the only movie so far to feature the winning combination of the Ultimate Force of Darkness plus an elevator… why have audiences had to sit through over a century of movie history while waiting for this obvious concept to be exploited? Hopefully soon there will be a similar flick utilizing the endless horror movie potential of the escalator.

Last week’s number one at the box office, Resident Evil: Afterlife fell to number four, with a weekend gross of $10.1 million and a total gross of $43.9 million. Number five went to new release Alpha and Omega, which earned $9.2 million.

Other new releases were Catfish (don’t worry, no spoilers here), which earned $255,252, Never Let Me Go ($120,830) and Philip Seymour Hoffman’s directorial debut, Jack Goes Boating ($30,000).

Out on September 22nd in limited release is Woody Allen’s You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger. The 24th sees the release of the long-awaited Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, You Again, Buried, Gaspar Noé’s Enter the Void, Howl, A Mother’s Courage: Talking Back to Autism and The Virginity Hit.
