Once More For The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games fought its way to the top yet again, becoming the first film since Avatar to claim the number one spot four weekends in a row. While the box office juggernaut’s weekend gross of $21.5 million (total gross $337 million) marks a 35% drop from last weekend, it still handily outpaced new releases The Three Stooges and The Cabin in the Woods, which earned $17.1 million and $14.8 million and came in at two and three, respectively. Coming in at number four was the 3-D re-release of Titanic, which earned $11.6 million. Meanwhile, last weekend’s runner-up American Reunion managed to secure one more week in the top five with its weekend gross of $10.6 million (total gross $39.8 million).

Also out in wide release was Lockout; the indie sci-fi thriller pulled in $6.2 million in approximately 2,300 theaters for a respectable per-theater gross of $2,708. Out in limited release were Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day ($650,319), Blue Like Jazz ($280,704), Touchback ($75,000), L!fe Happens ($21,890) and Hit So Hard ($6,500). Bully, which hit theaters in New York and Los Angeles on March 30th, expanded its theatrical run to 158 theaters across the country; its weekend gross of $534,000 makes for an impressive per-theater gross of $3,380.

Out next week and hoping to dethrone The Hunger Games where The Three Stooges failed are The Lucky One, Think Like a Man and Chimpanzee, Disneynature’s latest Earth Day documentary. If none of those strike your fancy, the upcoming slate of limited releases includes everything from docs (Marley, Inside Hana’s Suitcase, Fightville, To the Arctic 3D) to foreign dramas (Goodbye First Love, Hong Sang-Soo’s The Day He Arrives) to indie dramedies (Darling Companion, Jesus Henry Christ) to horror (Penumbra, The Moth Diaries). And if there’s not something in that diverse list to get you out to the theater, well, there’s always Netflix.
