Avengers Assemble at the Box Office

So, you might have heard—The Avengers did pretty well at the box office this weekend.

If by “pretty well” you mean it shattered the record for best three-day weekend (previously held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2) with its $200.3 million haul ($18.7 million of which came from midnight showings alone). Add that to the $441.5 million it’s earned internationally since it came out just over a week-and-a-half ago, and the superhero extravaganza has racked up $641.8 million in just 12 days. All very good news for distributor Disney, which definitely needed a post-John Carter morale boost.

Coming in at number two (wait, there were other movies out?) was last weekend’s champ Think Like a Man; its $8 million weekend gross brings its total so far to $73 million. The Hunger Games (weekend gross $5.7 million, total gross $380.7 million) and The Lucky One (weekend gross $5.5 million, total gross $47.9 million) held steady at spots three and four, respectively, while The Pirates! Band of Misfits (weekend gross $5.4 million, total gross $18.5 million) slid three spots to number five.

Out in limited release over the weekend were The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel ($750,301 in only 27 locations, for an impressive per-theater average of $27,789), First Position ($47,300) and A Little Bit of Heaven ($9,830).

Out in wide release next weekend and definitely still losing to The Avengers (sorry Tim Burton) is Dark Shadows. Limited releases include A Bag of Hammers, The Cup, God Bless America, Girl in Progress, Hick, I Wish, Sleepless Night and Transit. MM
