Box Office Goes R-Rated with Ted and Magic Mike

After three weeks of kid’s movies dominating the box office, R-rated comedies Ted and Magic Mike surpassed expectations to earn weekend grosses of $54.1 million and $39.1 million, respectively, claiming spots one and two in the process. Coming in third was the decidedly PG-rated Brave; its weekend gross of $34 million brings its total so far to $131.6 million. Newly out in wide release over the weekend, the dismal critical reception of Madea’s Witness Protection didn’t stop it from making a fair chunk of change—to the tune of $26.3 million, landing it in the number four spot. (The same cannot be said of People Like Us—though substantially better-reviewed than Madea’s Witness Protection, it earned a mere $4.3 million, only enough to land the Chris Pine-starring drama at number ten.) Rounding out the top five was Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted; its weekend gross of $11.8 million brings its total so far to $180 million.

Among the films to come out in limited release over the weekend were Beasts of the Southern Wild ($169,236 in only four theaters), Take This Waltz ($150,000) and Neil Young Journeys ($13,280).

Out next weekend and hoping to bring the box office back to more kid-friendly territory are The Amazing Spider-Man and Katy Perry: Part of Me… and then there’s Savages, the latest from Oliver Stone, who in all likelihood has never had the descriptor “kid-friendly” attached to any of his films. Out in limited release are Collaborator, Crazy Eyes, The Do-Deca Pentathlon The Magic of Belle Isle, The Pact, Starry Starry Night and Vampires.
