New releases Tower Heist and A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas were unable to topple last week’s number one movie, Puss in Boots; the Shrek spinoff’s weekend gross of $33 million brings its total so far to $75.5 million. Meanwhile, Tower Heist and Harold & Kumar managed to rack up only $25 million and $13 million, respectively. Slipping two spots from last week to number four was Paranormal Activity 3 (weekend gross $8.5 million, total gross $95.3 million), while In Time‘s $7.7 million weekend gross (total gross $24.2 million) was enough to keep it in the top five.
New last weekend in limited release were The Son of No One ($19,800), Young Goethe in Love ($18,500) and The Other F Word ($14,600).
Hitting theaters this weekend—and hoping for a less tepid opening gross than either of last weekend’s wide releases—are J. Edgar, Immortals, 11-11-11 and Jack and Jill. Out in limited release are The Conquest, Eames: The Architect & The Painter, Into the Abyss, London Boulevard and Melancholia.
