Puss in Boots Shreds the Competition

A week after Paranormal Activity 3‘s unexpectedly high $52.5 million opening weekend gross thoroughly trounced the competition, the box office was back to mediocre numbers last weekend as new release Puss in Boots took the number one spot with a weekend gross of $34 million. Paranormal Activity 3 (weekend gross $18.5 million, total gross $81.3 million) slid to spot number two, beating out the underperforming new releases In Time ($12 million) and The Rum Diary ($5 million), which came in third and fifth, respectively. Coming in fourth was Footloose; its $5.4 million weekend gross brings its total so far to $38.4 million.

Among new limited releases to hit theaters was Roland Emmerich’s Anonymous, a history-based drama (or a pseudohistory-based drama, depending on whom you ask) about the real author of Shakespeare’s plays, which took in $1 million. Like Crazy, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, pulled in $120,000, and All’s Faire in Love, a Christina Ricci-starring comedy about rival Renaissance Faires, earned $47,000.

Out next weekend in wide release are Tower Heist and, the first of the holiday-themed movies set to hit theaters in the next few months, A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas. Coming out in limited release are Another Happy Day, Young Goethe in Love, Killing Bono, The Last Rites of Joe May, The Other F Word, Charlotte Rampling: The Look and The Son of No One.
