Madagascar 3 Stays on Top

Neither Tom Cruise nor Adam Sandler had the power to take down a bunch of talking animals at the box office.

New releases Rock of Ages and That’s My Boy took in a disappointing $15 million and $13 million over the weekend, respectively, leaving Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted (weekend gross $35.5 million, total gross $120.4 million) and Prometheus (weekend gross $20.2 million, total gross $88.8 million) alone in the top two spots for one more week. Embarrassingly enough for That’s My Boy, Adam Sandler’s first R-rated comedy, the sum it earned was outstripped by the three-week-old Snow White and the Huntsman, which came in at number four with its weekend gross of $13.8 million (total gross $122.6 million).

Out in limited release over the weekend were Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap ($150,000), Your Sister’s Sister ($118,250) and The Woman in the Fifth ($36,985). Meanwhile, Safety Not Guarnteed, co-starring Your Sister’s Sister actor Mark Duplass (been a good week for him) picked up a few dozen theaters and consequently saw its box office jump over 200% from last weekend.

Vying next weekend for Madagascar 3‘s crown will be Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and Brave—the last of which will hopefully serve as a return to form for Pixar after the critical disappointment that was Cars 2. Out in limited release will be The Well Digger’s Daughter, Kumaré, The Invisible War, To Rome with Love and Stella DaysMM
