Sucker Punch Defeated by a Wimpy Kid

Well, it looks like Sucker Punch was taken out by a wimpy kid. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, to be precise. The two new releases are intended for vastly different audiences, with Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules geared towards the all-important pre-teen market. The fact that it’s the sequel to last year’s successful Diary of a Wimpy Kid, in addition to being based on a popular children’s book series, means Zack Snyder’s PG-13 movie featuring gun-toting, sword-wielding teen girls engaging in stylized fights while wearing revealing clothing never stood a chance. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules came in first place with $24.4 million, while Sucker Punch‘s $19 million weekend gross was enough to grab it second place. Last weekend’s number one, Limitless, fell to number three (weekend gross $15.2 million, total gross $41.2 million), while The Lincoln Lawyer (weekend gross $11 million, total gross $28.9 million) and Rango (weekend gross $9.8 million, total gross $106.3 million) rounded out the top five.

Out in limited release this past weekend were The 5th Quarter ($218,578), Potiche ($85,000), Miral ($65,000), White Irish Drinkers ($19,300), Mia and the Migoo ($17,239) and Peep World ($6,500).

Out next weekend are Hop, Insidious and Source Code, with James Gunn’s Super, the documentaries Circo and Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead, Oscar-winner In a Better World and the long-awaited Rubber coming out in limited release. Haven’t heard of Rubber? It’s about a self-aware, telepathic, psychotic tire (tagline: “Are you TIRED of the expected?”). Sorry, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, your glory days are over.
