Cowboys & Aliens and Smurfs, Oh My!

Update: The Hollywood Reporter has announced that the final gross of Cowboys & Aliens will be somewhere in the neighborhood of $36 million, putting The Smurfs in second place. The race is over. Everyone can relax.

It was neck and neck all the way to the finish line, and after the numbers came in… it was still too close to call. Two of last weekend’s new releases, Cowboys & Aliens and The Smurfs, tied for first place at the box office, each film closing off the weekend with a gross of $36.2 million. Last week’s number one movie, Captain America: The First Avenger, dropped to number three; its weekend gross of $24.9 million brings its total domestic gross so far to $116.7 million. Even though Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 only came in fourth (weekend gross: $21.9 million), the fact that its worldwide gross hit the $1 billion mark over the weekend means that the boy wizard’s still no one to smurf with. Coming in fifth was the new release Crazy Stupid Love, which earned $19.3 million over the weekend.

Last weekend’s new limited releases were Attack the Block ($130,000), The Devil’s Double ($95,000), The Guard ($80,398), Life in a Day ($45,454) and The Future ($28,185).

Going up against the combined box office might of cowboys, aliens and ’80s nostalgia are next weekend’s wide releases The Change-Up and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Slated for limited release are Bellflower, Gun Hill Road, Magic Trip, Mysteries of Lisbon, My Friend Pinto, The Perfect Age of Rock ‘n’ Roll and The Whistleblower.
