Just call these past few months the Summer of Marvel. Only months after the release of box office champions Thor and X-Men: First Class, Captain America: The First Avenger became the studio’s latest number one movie, earning $65.8 million in its first weekend of release. Last week’s top movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, was knocked down to second place, its weekend gross of $48 million bringing its total so far to $274.1 million. The number three spot was filled by another new release, the romantic comedy Friends with Benefits (weekend gross $18.5 million), and rounding out the top five were Transformers: Dark of the Moon (weekend gross $12 million, total gross $325.7 million) and Horrible Bosses (weekend gross $11.7 million, total gross $82.4 million).

Newly out in limited release last weekend were Sarah’s Key ($117,045), Another Earth ($78,413), A Little Help ($48,048) and The Myth of the American Sleepover ($8,700).

On the slate for wide release next weekend are Cowboys and Aliens, Crazy Stupid Love and The Smurfs, with El Bulli: Cooking in Progess, Life in a Day, Assassination Games, Attack the Block, Point Blank, The Devil’s Double, The Future, Good Neighbors and The Guard out in limited release. MovieMaker wishes all of those movies the best of luck in attempting to defeat Captain America. They’ll need it.
