Fast Five was taken down by a Norse god after one short week of box office glory. New release Thor took the top spot at the box office this past weekend, earning $66 million. Fast Five fell to number two; its $32.5 million weekend gross brings its total gross to $139.8 million in just ten days. Other new releases to crack the top five were Jumping the Broom ($13.7 million) and Something Borrowed ($13.1 million). Last week’s runner-up, Rio, came in at number five (weekend gross $8.2 million, total gross $114.9 million).
New limited releases out last weekend were There Be Dragons ($688,940), The Beaver ($104,000), Forks Over Knives ($27,000), Hobo with a Shotgun ($12,250) and Octubre ($8,258).
Will next weekend’s box office champion continue the tradition of manly action heroes beating up bad guys with guns and/or hammers? Upcoming wide releases going head-to-head with the god of thunder are Bridesmaids, directed by “Freaks and Geeks” creator Paul Feig and co-produced by Judd Apatow, and Priest, in which Paul Bettany plays a warrior priest whose weapons look to be either knives or his own flying fists. Out in limited release next weekend are The Big Bang, The Bleeding House, Brother’s Justice, Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff, Everything Must Go, The First Grader, Hesher, Hey, Boo: Harper Lee and ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, How to Live Forever, L’Amour Fou, Neds, Skateland (not to be confused with Stake Land, which came out last month), True Legend and The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls.
