Thor held on to the top spot at the box office last weekend, but it had some competition from Paul Feig, Judd Apatow and some bridesmaids. The superhero movie made $34.5 million over the weekend, bringing its total gross to $119.2 million, but the raunchy R-rated comedy’s opening weekend take of $24.4 million was higher than most people expected considering. . . well, considering Bridesmaids is a raunchy R-rated comedy about bridesmaids. Fast Five fell one spot to number three, with its weekend gross of $19.5 million bringing its total so far to $168.7 million. Rounding out the top five were new release Priest (weekend gross $14.5 million) and Rio (weekend gross $8 million, total gross $124.9 million).
Other new releases last weekend were Everything Must Go ($825,100), Hesher ($126,811), Go For It! ($125,000), L’amour fou ($35,000), The First Grader ($22,568), Hey, Boo: Harper Lee and ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ ($5,450), Skateland ($5,165) and How to Live Forever ($3,400), all out in limited release.
Next weekend’s sole wide release–and certain box office champion, sorry Thor, start packing–is Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Out in limited release are Louder Than a Bomb, 35 and Ticking, Bloodworth, Cost of a Soul, The Lion of Judah (which is about “a bold lamb (Judah) and his stable friends [who] try to avoid the sacrificial alter [sic] the week preceding the crucifixion of Christ.” No, really.), Ranchero and Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, which opened the Cannes Film Festival last week.
