At the top of the box office this past weekend was The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The newly-released movie, third in the Chronicles of Narnia series, made $24.5 million over the weekend, a substantial drop from the first-weekend earnings of the previous Narnia movie, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian ($55 million). Both films opened with a substantially smaller gross than did The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.
Coming in second was new release The Tourist ($17 million), with Tangled ($14.5 million weekend gross, $115.6 million total gross), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 ($8.5 million weekend gross, $257.6 million total gross) and Unstoppable ($3.7 million weekend gross, $74.2 million total gross) comprising the rest of the top five.
Other new releases were The Fighter ($320,000), The Tempest ($45,000) and The Garden of Eden ($12,500).
Next weekend Disney plans to reassert its dominance over the box office with the release of Tron: Legacy. At this point it’s been a whole week since Tangled had the top spot. Show ’em who’s boss, Disney. Also out next weekend are How Do You Know? and Yogi Bear 3D, with Casino Jack and Rabbit Hole out in limited release, and The Fighter expanding to wide release.
